#TradSongTues 9th October - Poetic Songs
This is a series of posts about the #TradSongTues project, run by various people at the University of Sheffield. Every week I've been recording a song for the theme, sharing it and talking about it. Come and play on Twitter!
In honour of #NationalPoetryDay next week's #TradSongTues theme is #PoeticSongs, either songs originating as poems, inspired by poems or with particular poetic flare - take is as you like it and let your inner muse roam free... pic.twitter.com/ug9a7UdZPt

I had 3 options for this week - so I ran a poll on what I should sing.
As per usual, my #TradSongTues will be recorded tonight and I've got three possibles for #PoeticSongs so I may as well run a poll for it. Titles are hidden to add suspense!

As you can see, "Village bird event" won which meant I get to share Heffle Cuckoo Fair
Heffle Cuckoo Fair is an event that happens in the village of Heffle on the 14th of April. From what I gather, the duchess let out a cuckoo to signify the beginning of spring and that just became a tradition. It's weird to me, because most of the traditional events that I know of (morris dancing for example) celebrate Summer instead of Spring, though of course I am under-read in this. My new ceilidh band uses as version of this where we skip past the refrain and just barrel through it and it's so much fun to play.
In case you wanted to know what each title meant:
- Large coal puffing
- Big Steamers
- Ship stopper
- Anchor song
- Village bird event
- Heffle Cuckoo Fair
