This is a series of posts about the #TradSongTues project, run by various people at the University of Sheffield. Every week I've been recording a song for the theme, sharing it and talking about it. Come and play on Twitter!

This time, I went with Daddy Fox:

I've fallen in love with this song because it's just so simple and joyful. I learned it from the Young Tradition, because a friend had a bootleg recording of them which is wonderful. From what I gather, it's a children's song that's from Down South. Devon I think? There's a myriad number of tunes for it but I think I like this one best.

I sing it differently to everyone else - most people pause on the "den-o", but I found that keeping the rhythm and adding ornamental flickers to signify that meant it was much more upbeat. This means that at the singaround people tried to slow it down, but the advantage of my voice is that I can refuse to let the chorus voices do that. Once I've sung it round a few times people will just accept my version. That's the folk process!
